Investing in services and resources to keep older adults thriving at home

Did you know older adults are one of Douglas County’s fastest-growing populations? That’s why Commissioners continue to invest in the resources and programs needed to help older adults remain independent, connected and secure later in life.

This week, Commissioners awarded $634,904 through the County’s Older Adult Initiative for projects that address priorities identified by our older adult community. That includes housing, transportation, in-home services, and access to information and resources.

The funded projects will:

• Deliver 35,000 hot meals to 250 Douglas County residents.
• Help older adults maintain safe, stable and accessible housing through navigation, repairs and home modifications.
• Provide emergency rental assistance to older adult households.
• Connect residents with chore and homemaker services, including yard work and minor repairs.
• Respond to more than 15,000 requests for information and assistance.
• Offer specialized case management for older adults experiencing poverty.
• Provide care calls to help older residents stay connected.
• Train and place older adults in early childhood careers.
• Improve coordination between community service systems.

The 2026 grant recipients are:

• Aging Resources of Douglas County: $80,000 for chore and homemaker assistance and resource navigation.
• Brothers Redevelopment: $75,000 for home repairs and modifications.
• Castle Rock Senior Activity Center: $62,000 for care calls and technology integration.
• Catholic Charities of Central Colorado: $39,600 for emergency rental assistance and case management.
• Douglas County Housing Partnership: $50,000 for housing navigation and support.
• Early Childhood Service Corps: $23,400 to train and place older adults in early childhood careers.
• Manna Resource Center: $104,904 for specialized case management.
• Nourish Meals on Wheels: $200,000 for hot meal delivery.

Douglas County launched the Older Adult Initiative in 2023 to better understand the challenges and opportunities facing the County’s growing older adult community. Through town halls, listening tours, surveys and community roadshows, residents helped identify the services most important to aging well.

The Older Adult Initiative Executive Committee, composed of representatives from multiple Douglas County departments and community members, made funding recommendations for consideration to the Board of County Commissioners. The committee’s diverse perspectives helped ensure the awards aligned with the identified priorities and address the needs of older adults and their caregivers throughout Douglas County.
