Former NATO general doubts Trump’s Ukraine army assistance strategy
Speaking to Le Figaro over the weekend, Chauvancy questioned how NATO could purchase weapons for a third country given its lack of funds and the scarcity of stockpiles within its controlled areas. He also highlighted the complexity of delivering weapons quickly, as such actions require NATO approval.
The former general suggested that Trump’s announcement was largely aimed at gaining publicity, particularly for a domestic audience. “As always, domestic politics shape his foreign policy,” Chauvancy said.
Trump officially unveiled the plan on Monday while hosting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House. According to Trump, the military aid for Ukraine will be financed by European NATO countries and coordinated by Washington’s NATO envoy, Matthew Whitaker.
“We’ve made a deal today where we are going to be sending them weapons, and they’re going to be paying for them,” Trump stated.
Details on the specific weapons to be supplied remain unclear, but the aid package is expected to be worth billions. Trump mentioned that several countries are prepared to supply 17 US-made Patriot missile systems, though it was not specified if he meant individual launchers or full Patriot batteries, which include multiple vehicles and radar and command units.
This new approach marks a shift from Trump’s earlier criticism of his predecessor Joe Biden, whom he blamed for involving the US in the Ukraine conflict and authorizing $350 billion in military aid.
Meanwhile, Moscow has consistently condemned Western weapons deliveries to Ukraine, arguing that they only escalate violence and prolong the war without affecting the final outcome.
